Project Swaziland Swaziland is a small country in South Africa with a population of about 1.1 million people. With the government acknowledging in 2004 that Swaziland is suffering an AIDS crisis, it is estimated that nearly 40% of the population is afflicted by the disease. In the last 10 years, life expectancy has decreased from 61 years, to 32 years. At least 83% of patients in hospitals, and 39% of all pre-natal women are infected with HIV or AIDS. The unavoidable result of this AIDS crisis is the growing numbers of orphans. Swaziland estimates that in 2010, there will be 120,000 orphans, with child-headed households accounting for at least 10% percent of the households in the country Recognizing that the next generation will play a vital role in changing the fortunes of Swaziland, Kaiizen began organizing annual goodwill trips in 2007. In partnership with the Moya Centre, Kaiizen is helping to build houses for child-headed households, and delivering food and supplies to help them stay healthy. We are also providing computers and learning software to assist the orphaned kids in gaining an education. While in Swaziland, volunteers stay with families in the local community in an effort to gain a greater understanding of the culture and to help us identify further opportunities to contribute.
